In 56 chapters and about 450 pages this book covers the gamut (no pun intended) of issues of what an aspiring or practicing professional photographer might face on the business side of their practice. Personally I would call it a "must read" along with the two other books mentioned below. While this book does not provide great depth in many areas, it does provide great breadth and quite useful depth. I would recommend "Best Business Practices for Photographers by John Harrington" and "The Professional Photographer's Legal Handbook by Nancy Wolff" as companions for this book to give you greater depth on many of the key areas covered in this book. While long in length, it is generally very quick reading. Highly recommended!

After reading this book, I find it more geared for the experienced / seasoned photographer. Not to say or discourage beginners; it's just that it may be a bit overwhelming to a beginner.I found it quite informative and detailed about most every area of the photography business.Definitely a great book to keep on the shelf for future reference.

This is a great gift for a photographer in school or wanting to start a business. It is good to have for reference as well. Helps out with tips for contracts and forms. Covers copyright information and how different types of photography businesses are run. I started out using this book while working on my commercial photography degree and I reference back to it more than often enough. It is WELL worth every penny plus some!

A good reference for Photographers. I often refer to it for issues that I have questions about.

perfect

This book is required reading for anyone intending to do business in the world of Photography. It also happens to be the required text for a class I'm taking. The class has readings laid out based on sections listed in the table of contents in the print version. The table of contents in the Kindle edition under Menu > Table of Contents (while reading the book) is grayed out. The table of contents does exist though but you have to hunt for it. Go the beginning and page forward until you find it. A bit inconvenient. My experience with using the Kindle 2 for course texts has taught me not to, yet. Perhaps the DX provides a better textbook experience but the price point is too steep.

Very detailed, well written.

I recommend this book to anyone who's serious about understanding the business practices in Photography. Sample Contracts, information on protecting your copyrights, everything is in here!

The Red Book (Caldecott Honor Book), by Barbara Lehman

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Kindergarten-Grade 6–This perfectly eloquent wordless book tells the complex story of a reader who gets lost, literally, in a little book that has the magic to move her to another place. On her winter-gray walk to school, a young girl spies a book's red cover sticking out of a snowdrift and picks it up. During class, she opens her treasure and finds a series of square illustrations showing a map, then an island, then a beach, and finally a boy. He finds a red book buried in the sand, picks it up, opens it, and sees a sequence of city scenes that eventually zoom in on the girl. As the youngsters view one another through the pages of their respective volumes, they are at first surprised and then break into smiles. After school, the girl buys bunches of helium balloons and floats off into the sky, accidentally dropping her book along the way. It lands on the street below and through its pages readers see the girl reach her destination and greet her new friend, and it isn't long before another child picks up that magical red book. Done in watercolor, gouache, and ink, the simple, streamlined pictures are rife with invitations to peek inside, to investigate further, and–like a hall of mirrors–reflect, refract, repeat, and reveal. Lehman's story captures the magical possibility that exists every time readers open a book–if they allow it: they can leave the "real world" behind and, like the heroine, be transported by the helium of their imaginations.–Kathy Krasniewicz, Perrot Library, Old Greenwich, CT Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. In this wordless mind trip for tots, Lehman develops a satisfying fantasy in a series of panels framed with thick white borders. The effect is of peering through portals, an experience shared by the characters as they independently stumble across enchanted red books that provide them with a videophone-like connection. Though wordless picture books often seem to be the province of fine artists indulging in high-concept braggadocio (as in Istvan Banyai's 1995 Zoom), Lehman's effort ensures child appeal with an unaffected drawing style and a simple, easy-to-follow story line about a friendship forged between a city girl and a faraway island boy. The message about the transporting power of story will moisten the eyes of many adult readers, but children will most appreciate the thought-provoking visuals, in which characters' actions influence the course of their own storybook narratives--likewise affecting the larger "red book," cleverly packaged to mimic the shape and color of its fictional counterpart. Ideal for fueling creative-writing exercises. Jennifer MattsonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I bought this for my 5 year old autistic son. He doesn't know his alphabet yet and is nowhere near ready to learn, but he is acutely aware that he doesn't know how to read. Before he figured this out he would tell cute little stories as he turned the pages in his books. Then he realized he couldn't read and stopped. He wouldn't even TELL us stories. He would only say "I can't read."So my brilliant mom suggested picture books. This looked the most promising because he likes maps and there aren't lots of children in the book nor is the storyline confusing. He doesn't have to ''imagine'' the plot or the characters. It's very simple. He was really resistant at first but once he figured out you could say whatever you want as you ''read'' the pictures (which is an important pre-reading skill) he began to love it. Last night he grabbed it for storytime himself, which was HUGE.

My 5-year old daughter and I love this book. It works on all levels, and I found myself thinking about the plot and "what-ifs" long after we finished reading. As someone who has been reading children's books daily to my three kids for 11 years, it's hard to come up with something new and different that makes an impression - but this book does it. I'm not even going to try and explain the plot because every summary sounds more confusing than the next, so just do this: BUY the book (or get it from your library, but I guarantee you are going to want your own copy) and just let the story happen. You won't regret it, I promise!

I gave this book to an American family which is quite unusual. The husband is ethnic Chinese, and the wife is ethnic Japanese. Naturally, their two children live in a household where Chinese, Japanese, and English are spoken daily. A picture book such as this was well received as it has no language limitations or challenges, a sort of linguistic ointment for a family which is uniquely blessed and, at times, frustrated.

This book is awesome. It was recommend to me for my classroom. I like it because the children can tell their own story by looking at the pictures. This is a wordless book. It helps the children to use their imagination and critically think. Thanks for sending it in a timely fashion. I appreciate your business and plan to order from you in the future.

My daughter loves this book. Everyone who reads it to her tells a slightly different story (and sometimes the same reader tells it differently) and now she has started to tell parts of the story. It's nice not having words as it allows space for her to tell a story. She loves the part with the balloons!

I Skype with my kids everyday. This book is just simply amazing for those cross border type parents trying to keep touch and have a nice story telling session every single time!I hope i can find more books like this! its incrediblycreativebrings out creativity in adultshelps shape a new story every timethe kids love the variationsapplicable for all and any agehas elements of a classicbest part: the adults never get board of it as they invent stuff as you go along!

Excited to add this wordless picture book to my collection of such in my speech and language therapy room!

Great book for increasing a child's imagination. I've brought this book out many times, as a grandma and as a nanny. I really recommend it.

In the conclusion to the trilogy, Magnus Chase & Co. are tasked with preventing Ragnarok. To do this they must sail eastward, to the Old World (if that sounds familiar then that is because we saw something similar in The Heroes of Olympus series). Now Magnus, Samirah, Alex, Heath, Blitz and the rest of floor 19 sail to Norway to prevent Loki from launching the ship that will allow the forces of the dead and the Giants to begin Ragnarok. They don't get too much help from the Gods because that would make it too easy and then the book would be depressingly short.Riordan's book is as humorous as always. I think my favorite part was the way he described Aegir as a hipster interested in microbrews, stuck in the express line at a Whole Foods because he just wanted to buy his matcha smoothie but ahead of him were tons of individuals who did not respect the sanctity of the express lane. As someone who has found himself in a similar situation at Whole Foods (thought it was Maple Water for me), I found this hilarious. In addition there are hilarious scenes involving giant metal ducks. The book is a great conclusion to the trilogy. Though I wish this were a five-parter and we had two more books with these characters, Ah well, maybe they will appear in some future books as Annabeth and Percy have appeared here. Here's hoping.

The Ship of the Dead was a great conclusion to the Magnus Chase series, however I did think it was the weakest entry of the three books. The first 150 pages or so were just way to convenient and predictable to look pass for a higher rating. This doesn't deter me though from saying this book was loads of fun and exciting. After we got pass the speed bumps of the first 1/4 of the book, Ship of the Dead truly shined. What Magnus Chase does best for me is how it develops its characters. You really got a more in-depth look into all the characters with this final book. Some more then others yes but every character had a spotlight moment. The plot ties up wonderfully but also leaves a door open to continue the series. Rick Riordan never disappoints his readers and if he does choose to continue Magnus' story best believe I will be along for the ride.

This is my favorite of the Magnus series. The adventures are a lot of fun. There is a nice little melding with Percy Jackson characters in the beginning. I love the sense of humor. Sarcasm is a great literary tool. There are lots of causes to support in the Riordan books and I like that young readers are introduced to ethical questions and each person's right to individuality - even if I don't always get every character- which is the whole point of all of us figuring out how to share the planet together! The elf and the dwarf remain my favorite characters.

This cover is gorgeous. I got my copy of the book delivered yesterday, on release day, and I cannot get over it. SO PRETTY.Now, onto the book. I love these characters. I want them all as my friends. Just like I did with Percy and Carter and Sadie and Apollo. So basically, everyone is awesome. Happy sigh. The actual story: awesome. I mean, duh. Gotta say, the Greek gods are MUCH better at rewarding heroes, but what Magnus ended up doing was super cool and I LOVE it. Speaking of love...Malex forever! Page 262. :) Crazy smile.Okay, so speaking of crazy smiles, that's all I had on my face these past two days. I read some of this book at school, so hopefully I didn't look too weird. The Ship of the Dead was super cool. Magnus and his friends had to do a bunch of impossible stuff and other kickass things. As always, the various Norse gods, jotun, elves, etc. were present. Good stuff. It made for some humorous and deadly (luckily not to Magnus or his friends) scenes. This book revealed a lot of backstory on the einherjar. Mallory, Halfborn, T.J. It was heartbreaking, and interesting, and funny. I liked this a lot.Oh, and WE SAW PERCY!!!!!!!!!! BADABADABADA!!!!!! Ahem. Anyway, something is happening down in New York. At least according to Annabeth at the end of the book. Also, Percy was there, like I said. He has a little sister, Estelle Blofis. :) :) :) Happy sigh. Squeal. Other noises that occur when Percy Jackson appears and is his beautiful self.So yeah. 5 stars.

I listened for about 2 hours to the audio tape on a long car ride and was so bored, I turned it off and opted for music the last hour of my car trip. Author's Percy Jackson series and follow up series were great, but you can tell what his political views are by reading this book and I just thought it wasn't necessary to include in a children's book. If you believe gender is fluid, then it won't bother you, otherwise, it might just feel annoying and unnecessary.

Riordan writes wonderful adventure novels for readers of all ages. I particularly like the fact that he shows no hesitation about having characters of different colors, cultures, religions, and sexual orientations, and they work together as one, as friends and partners, instead of enemies. A message the youth of today sorely need. Good job! It's great to see a writer of children's and young adults' novels not shying away from political correctness.

Rick Riordan does again. Smart, accurate, funny, and serious. I have never seen an author nearly perfect this in a while. I have been a fan of his demigod books since The Lightning Thief, though I still hate the movie versions, I have read every book since then and the Magnus Chase books are the best by far. The gods are completely nuts and bizarre, but they are great and well written. The biggest thing I love about his books is that every story has to be read from Lightning Thief and onwards to understand and know every in-joke and character outside the new cast. All the pantheons connect and I cannot wait to see how it will all end. I still don't want to see it all go though. Keep up the great work Riordan.

Read it as soon as I could. Anticipating something good to read for months. Ties in well with other series, easy to read. Interesting enough to keep you reading to the end as fast as possible.

Tomboy: A Graphic Memoir, by Liz Prince

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Prince knew from an early age that she was not a typical girl. The only pictures of her in a dress were from when she was a baby and could not protest. She hates dresses and all things "girly." Fortunately, she had supportive parents who did not force her into traditional gender roles and who let her wear the kinds of clothing she wanted. Most of Prince's friends were boys, and her fantasies and playtime were devoted to being a hero, not a princess. Her wardrobe choices made her the target of ridicule and bullying in Boston and in Santa Fe, where her family moved when she was in early elementary school. In their first neighborhood, most of her friends were boys, but she found some girlfriends after the family moved. It was the first time she found girls with similar interests in comics and Ghostbusters, and it was also when she realized that she did not want to be a boy but, rather, wanted the freedom that came with being one. Meeting a good friend of her mother's, who encouraged her talent and interest in comics, and transferring to a very small, highly experimental high school helped her become comfortable with her choice as a tomboy. Although Prince has created a work that will affirm the choices of tomboys, the black-and-white illustrations show little variation among characters, and the text is sometimes difficult to read. The chronology is also confusing, as Prince often jumps from childhood to adolescence in the space of one frame and then jumps back to childhood again. Purchase where graphic novel memoirs are in demand.—Suanne B. Roush, formerly at Osceola High School, Seminole, FL

Review

“Prince explores what it means to be a tomboy in a magnificently evocative graphic memoir….Simple, line-based art provides a perfect complement to her keen narration, giving this an indie, intimate feel and leaving readers feeling like they really know her. Liz’s story, captured with wry humor and a deft, visceral eye, is a must-read for fans who fell for Raina Telgemeier’s work in middle school. Spectacular; a book to make anyone think seriously about society’s preordained gender roles.” —Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)"Liz Prince tells gender norms to eat dirt. A delightful, thoughtful, and compulsively readable memoir. And an important one." —Ariel Schrag, author of Adam and Potential "Liz Prince may have been an uncertain, confused kid, but she’s a confident and sincerely expressive cartoonist. Tomboy is a funny and relatable look at what every child has to deal with at some point—figuring out who you really are inside, when everyone else only sees what they think you should be on the outside." —Jeffrey Brown, author of Clumsy, Jedi Academy and Darth Vader and Son"It's hard to imagine anyone failing to be charmed by this entertaining, clever, and genuinely funny memoir of growing up with gender identity confusion. Even this pretty unconfused regular old dude found plenty to identify with in Liz Prince’s story of adolescent bafflement, exploration, and discovery—all delivered, like all the best such stories, with a light touch, wry wit, understated irony, and not one iota of preachiness. Meaning: I’m a fan. Go Liz!" —Frank Portman, author of King Dork "Tomboy is a thoughtful, honest look into the evolution and acceptance of personal gender identity, as told by a smart-mouhed punk named Liz Prince. My “tomboy” daughter is in love with this book. She’s read it at least thirty times and counting. It’s sincerely been inspirational for her. She unfortunately doesn’t get to meet many/any likeminded girls her age. And, because we still live in a narrow-minded society when it comes to gender, she gets teased far too often for dressing or “acting” like a boy. It’s infuriating for me, thankfully not so much for her, and books like this one are a good part of the reason why. She’s of course not alone. This well-drawn and written book stands as nice very evidence for her.

Tomboy by Liz Prince is a book I bought because it was $2.99 on Kindle. It's an autobiographical comic about - you guessed it - a tomboy. Starting with her early memories before jumping forward to second grade, Tomboy chronicles Liz Prince's life up through high school in Santa Fe. She isn't a lesbian. She isn't transgender. She isn't asexual. She just rejects traditional models of feminine behavior. She hates wearing dresses, she feels uncomfortable about her body, and she wears a baseball cap everywhere she goes.Okay, so if you're a tomboy, this is the book for you. What about everyone else? The book is wordy, but I found myself reading every panel; it's engaging and sometimes funny. The artwork is crude, but the facial expressions worked for me. Prince shows a talent for conveying body language and interactions between the people in her comic. She's talented. It is a medium read at 250 or so pages, but it took me an hour and a half or two hours to read because there was so much dialogue and other writing in it. I predict she'll have a long career in this medium. ****

I wondered if I had written this book myself! I had the same experiences with the dress, but instead mine was with a frilly lacy shirt . Hated dolls, but loved trucks and stuffed animals and puzzles. Loved the school sex education assembly scene. I had a very similar reaction. I'm a self-confessed tomboy and am still wearing men's clothes and skateboarding at 51! Tomboys are the coolest girls out there! Look at Patti Smith! Hope the guys are paying attention!

My 11-year old completely identifies with this book. She hates to read but likes the graphic novels, so this is a win-win. There are swear words in it, so if your child or you can't handle that, then don't buy this. Otherwise, it's perfect for girls who don't like the "traditional" girly things.

This book was a very good read. Though I will say this, this book should be more for thirteen year olds because there is some content not for younger readers, such as drugs and Liz smoking at the age of fifteen (I believe) and some snogging and sex (but it doesn't get onto all the details, it only mentions it). But the book is great, and it really opens your eyes on how society puts up expectations for girls that seem very unfair.

Graphic novel where Liz tells about her growing up preferring boy things and to literally be a boy and all the challenges not conforming to gender stereotypes presented in school. She perfectly captures what grade school and high school were like. Older women are key in her learning that she can still be a girl without liking the stuff society says girls should like. Bechdel test: Pass. Grade: A-P.S. The Kindle version does not skip from panel to panel as with some comics, but it's very readable if you have a larger-screened Kindle.

I am a huge fan of graphic memoirs, and this one was very authentic and lovely in my opinion. I enjoyed it enough to immediately order another Liz Prince book (Will You Still Love Me If I Wet The Bed?). If you're seeking a book about transgender coming of age however, this might be borderline upsetting or just not as relatable. I am not trans but have many friends who are, and I just want to clarify this book isn't about that. It's more about a girl who does not identify with the feminine norms.

Cute and funny autobiographical comic about Liz Prince's childhood and youth as a Tomboy. Given that I did not grow up in the U.S.A., this comic gives me a somewhat daunting image of schools in America... seems like bullying and making fun of other people for being different is considered acceptable behavior....!It's a great book to reassure kids and grown-ups that one does not have to conform to what the majority of society dictates, and it's the best book for girls/women who don't enjoy dressing up in pink, wearing make-up, being super-Disney-princess-like girly, and who prefer pants to dresses!

The storytelling had more narration than I've experienced in other novels in this genre. With that said, however, I found this experience satisfying.A word of caution, first. This story does not avoid the dark difficult aspects of true villians. If you are fragile or need stories that don't get too gritty or real, then this book is probably not for you.The tactical and operational aspects of a team of "operators" seemed real to me. Overall, the sense of team between the Security Team members and between the h and H was conveyed well. I liked this. The h and H were people I could root for and understand. I liked that the hero (H) was decisive and strong in his commitments. For me, the mental/emotional connection is more important than the physical connection. So many authors in this genre give that part of a relationship short shrift, but not here. This author gives details to the foundational commitment between our h and H that are usually left to the imagination (while leaving details of sexual coming together more to the imagination). The love and caring of all characters came together for a very satisfying conclusion.

That being said, this is still a great book! I feel the author could have glossed over stuff but it would have been a disservice to the story. Very realistic suffering followed. That was where it was different. Unfortunately, not many have such an understanding , loving support person. Yet the gradual love and admiration of the team for Angel made it work. I will be buying the next book!

Nice read, likeable characters. Few edit issues that made me go, wait, what? But they did not ruin the overall story. The storyline and characters were good enough to make me look forward to another book in the series.

Emotional roller coaster! Loved the compassion and the camaraderie of the team! Lots of action! Dealt with some harsh realities but also taught coping techniques and how being a survivor and not a victim can help you overcome!

A really great read that takes you into the life of victims of savage acts. I would totally recommend this book.

Good spec ops novel with lots of tension and anxiety but a decent ending. Might even read it again soon.

I was pleasantly surprised. Some of the topics are not for the faint heartbreaking with rape and violence, but I liked how the subjects explored trauma and rape counselling with a HEA.

Great story line that was action packed. Loved the characters and of course the happy ever after ending. Moving on to the next book.

Volume 2 of Kiss Him, Not me picks up where the story left off. Kae has just gotten back to school after the summer anime conventions, and four boys in school still want her. Of course, Kae is still a massive perv and would rather fantasize about the boys with each other. This volume is dominated by anime. At the school festival, Kae gets everyone on board with a Cosplay cafe, and she ends up making the guys a bunch of costumes. References to other works abound, and serve to lighten the mood. But this also leads to the best character choice so far in the story: the boys deciding they don't want to date Kae together and splitting up. There is only so far this could go without Kae turning into a ridiculous Mary Sue, so I'm glad that plot line is easing up. This and the introduction of a new character, leave me hopeful for the third volume. However, there is one annoying flub, the timeline. This volume started at the summer festival and ended at Christmas, which is a ridiculous time skip. I really hope they never pull a stunt like that again.

Fangirl Kae has four admirers, and here, they go on a series of dates in expected manga situations. First, there’s the school festival, and due to the cosplay theme, Kae gets to make outfits for several of the guys (including one who’s playing princess). They get upset at spending all their time with her in a group, though, so they draw up an individual dating schedule. That, and the way they all work together in preparation for the event, gave me more insight into how to distinguish the guys, which was a big help, compared to the first book. Shinomiya is the young blond, aching to be seen as more mature, a real man. Igarashi is the caring, thoughtful nice guy who also wants to tell the truth. Nanashima is the pushy, flirty other blond. Mutsumi is the older, sensible one, a comforting presence.Kiss Him, Not Me! is a light, breezy read that doesn’t make fun of its lead for her fannish interests. She doesn’t want to make a choice yet, enjoying finding out more about what she wants. Her nervousness in dealing with attractive men is both amusing and sympathetic, making for a dating manga I enjoy. Plus, whenever she gets the courage to say what she really wants, everyone says, “ok, sounds good”, a nice bit of validation. In a later Christmas story, she actually takes them all to Comiket, and they buy doujinshi for her. They know what she likes! (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

It was such a good read. The mix of comedy and high school romace. Would definitely reccomend to others

i loved this one as much as the first one. all the characters kept the story going so smoothly and i liked when she was up front with the guys about her feelings... and the ending!!!! could this mean possible yuri? as a yaoi fan to the end im not into yuri but the twist of a gender bender character gives a surprise twist for me.

My daughter loves this series. I have not read it so I can only go by what she says.

My kids love this series of books.
